Inspiring future music learning
Musical Futures, Roland UK, Rockschool and Walsall College are collaborating to bring you this exciting CPD event, designed for classroom music teachers and music practitioners.
Play - Learn - Live will provide a range of CPD and good-practice sharing sessions, that will focus around Musical Futures strategies for innovative music teaching; music technology; and strategies for working with young bands. There will be an exciting trade exhibition, with many opportunities for hands-on music making, and young bands from Roland Academies will perform throughout the day.

WORKSHOPS AND DROP-IN SESSIONS
Musical Futures Transition Project
Musical Futures has recently developed a transition project that builds on primary school programmes, and that link into Musical Futures pedagogies in secondary schools. This session led by Anna Gower, Monk’s Walk School and MF National Coordinator, will introduce the concept and workshop the materials (based on Passenger by Iggy Pop), that are designed for primary teachers (non-specialists and music specialists) and secondary music teachers. Transition has become ‘nobody’s problem’. Let’s change that!
Musical Futures in One Classroom
Musical Futures Champion Teacher John Kelleher (Baylis Court School, Slough) has found an innovative way of running inspiring Musical Futures lessons in a limited space. This practical session will explore the technology and resources needed to do this, share some common issues, and explore how to make this work in whatever space you have available.
Applying Classroom Workshopping
This session led by MF Champion Emily Segal, Harrogate Grammar School, will explore the Musical Futures classroom workshopping model in more detail, and will look at how you can apply the non-formal teaching and learning strategies to different genres of music, i.e. minimalism, particularly at Key Stage 4.
Our music, Our Resources, Our Technology
Year 11 students at Fred Longworth High School have created and developed website tutorials and resources for songs that are then used by Year 9 Musical Futures students. In this session delegates will explore how to use students to create online resource materials to help to coach, support and develop instrumental skills among their younger peers. Led by MF Champion Martin Ainscough, James Emberley and students from Fred Longworth High School.
NUMU iPhone App Launch
Music goes mobile with the launch of the NUMU app! This session led by Cliff Manning (Radiowaves and NUMU) will introduce the latest mobile and online developments from www.numu.org.uk, the FREE safe social network for schools to share and showcase their music. Online mentoring with Musical Futures Young Champions
Find out how young people are using NUMU to mentor others and collaborate online through this innovative Musical Futures project. Hear from two Young Champions, and explore how to engage your students as online mentors.
Rockschool: Riffs and Grooves
The ‘Riffs and Grooves’ session focuses on effective strategies for band rehearsals. Experienced tutors will work with pre-arranged young bands on all aspects of performance and rehearsal stagecraft using classic rock and pop repertoire as the source material.
JamPod - the Silent Band
A practical session exploring (i) the technologies involved in creating a 'silent' band - the JamPod, and (ii) using this unique 'studio' environment to enhance teaching and learning. Expect lots of fun, and little noise!
The Charanga Guide to E-Learning
Charanga Music provides schools with a comprehensive library of more than 6,000 digital learning resource to support aspects of music teaching at Key Stages 3 and 4. This workshop will feature hip hop artist Max Wheeler who has worked with Charanga to develop Hip Hop Coach. Max will demonstrate how to turn this creative medium into an instantly engaging resource for your pupils.
Sequencing made simple with MusicCreator
Music sequencing is now an established activity within the curriculum and is a great way to compose, record and produce. Music Creator - designed by Cakewalk (one of the world's leadding music software companise), provide a perfect (and affordable) platform for PC-based production. Luke Edwards will demonstrate the basics: setting up tracks, recording audio, using virtual instruments, editing, adding effects and more.
Getting Loopy
This is a practical workshop focussing on the creative possibilities of looping using the world renowned Boss RC-50 Loop Station. This session is designed for teachers with a basic knowledge of music technology, and it will demonstrate the Loop Station''s potential for developing creativity at all levels.
Bring your music alive with Notion3
This session focuses on the award-winning notation program NOTION3. Chris Swaffer will demonstrate how to create a score and playback live (using the inbuilt sample library), and will give an overview of the next step in notation and audio integration through the magic of ReWire TM
